July is a transitional month for many distance athletes recycling for next year's campaign, but several NBSV'ers took to the streets and the track over the latter half of the month.
Over the last twelve months, NBSV athletes have competed in venues far and wide, including 20 states (CA, FL, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, NV, NH, NM, NY, OR, PA, RI, TX, WA, WI) and 8 countries (US, Canada, Mexico, England, France, Norway, Turkey, Sweden). However, to conclude things for 2011-12, team members were primarily close to home.
Following up on their victories at the One Mile Bang on July 8, Kris Paaso and JT Sullivan represented the team at the San Rafael Mile on July 15, which also served as the Pacific Association / USATF Road Mile Championships. Although not able to surpass her club record time of 4:45 in Los Gatos the previous week, Paaso took second to Cal grad Allison Greggor in a close 4:52. Although a bit past his peak, JT Sullivan broke out the lightweight RC5000 flats to help him to fourth in his first PA Road Champs.
Paaso put a final piece of punctuation on her season later in the week with a 2:13 800 at the Los Gatos All-Comers meet. Paced through at 64-65 by Pete Trudelle (who moved ahead to finish in second overall), Paaso (pending updated rankings and no late breaking results), should conclude the 2012 track season as the top ranked 40+ US female track and field athlete at 1 mile, 3000m, and 5000m, holding a #2 ranking on the 800 and 1500 lists as well. Great year!
On July 22, Melinda DiNapoli hoisted the flag for NBSV at the classic footrace Wharf to Wharf. Fighting a bit of a cold, DiNapoli ran 37:08 for 2nd masters athlete in one of the deepest women's fields in recent memory.
July 29th found several athletes in action at the Wipro San Francisco Marathon and Half Marathon. Chris Mocko led the squad with 4th in the full marathon, breaking 2:30 for what seems like the 20th time this year. John McGuire placed 14th in the Second Half Marathon, while Mary Liz McCurdy and Suet-Fei Li both cracked the top 20 in that portion as well. Meanwhile up north, Sam Yount and Maggie Conley were busy taking top honors at the Harrison, Idaho Old Timer Picnic 10K. Yes, their wins were essentially uncontested....
Our Scandinavian correspondents Annie Bersagel and Øyvind Heiberg Sundby have been racing regularly, with Øyvind tackling several mountain races successfully, and Annie earning 4th in a season best 9:25 at the Uppsala meeting and 1st in a solo 5K effort at Molndal last week. Both are slated to contest the Copenhagen Half Marathon on September 9.
Out of uniform, NBSV'ers have also been active, with several athletes participating as counselors at the second annual Bay Area Running Camp. We are excited to be getting our weightroom routine started for 2012-13 with our friends at the Pacific THERx Fitness Center, and are looking forward to the rapidly approaching fall Cross Country and Road seasons.
